Sew close to tragic...

Sorry about the blog title... I couldn't resist lol...

Last night I nearly had a bit of a tragic moment!! Well that might be an understatement - because last night I nearly stuffed my sewing machine... AAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....
... Luckily the story has a happy ending - but there were a few naughty words cursed at myself under my breath last night before that happy ending came I can tell you!!
Let me tell you the story...

It started so innocently... Last night I set myself the goal of finishing my pretty little purse swap. The mailing date for these is coming up shortly and it was kind of one of those jobs that had been hanging over my head because I've been so busy with doing other things. Yesterday I decided it was high time to make it, get it off my to-do list, and have some fun sewing time!!

So anyway, before I'd even started I had to remove the white bobbin and replace it with another colour. When I did that I noticed a little piece of lint in my bobbin case....
I pulled it, and then another little piece appeared...

...One thing led to another...

... and pretty soon I had figured out that yes my bobbin case does come out (don't laugh!!) (Yes, I've owned this machine for a year and never cleaned it...) so I whipped that baby out and would you believe that it was pretty darn filthy under there!! This is how much filth was lurking in fact:

Let me give you a little idea of the scale of this pile...

I can't believe that my machine was working with all that gunk in there!! Pretty filthy huh!!
I was actually thinking I should get it serviced in a few weeks when we go to NZ and I'm pretty pleased I discovered it before them - they may have looked at me like I neglected my child or something... (joke)

Anyway here comes the part that nearly bought me to tears...
So I go to put my bobbin case back in and it all goes back together ok - or so I thought... but when I put my bobbin in I did think to myself "that bobbin looks a little crooked, I don't think that was crooked before..." and sure enough it obviously wasn't - because 3 seconds later my machine goes into "safety mode" and the whole thing jams and breaks...

...sob...
...sob....
...SOB....

To cut a long story short... after about half and hour of me madly trying to fix it, and freaking out that I was not going to be able to complete my swaps or other urgent sewing jobs, I went against my brothers (perfectly good) advice not to use my screwdriver to pry the bobbin case out and did it anyway (because I do have a spare one which I always wondered why I would need a spare...). But luckily for me no harm was done and I managed to put everything back together again.

And
it
sews
fine....

PHEW!!!!!!!!

So the moral of the story Kat is - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST NEXT TIME....
That is my note to self!!

I guess I'm pretty lucky that my sewing machine is very forgiving of my neglect!! I used to clean my old one regularly when I had to oil it (and every time it went stupid on me - which was often!), but I'm not supposed to oil my current machine, so I guess I just never figured to clean it... pfft...

Anyway no harm done and I did get to sew my "pretty little purse" for my swap partner and it looks fab!
Pictures to come.
