I have worked so hard this week (well and last for that matter) and Neil and I are definitely both looking forward to blobbing on the couch in front of a movie for a date night tonight! Bring it on baby!! I can't actually even remember the last time I sat on the couch & watched tv - probably not since masterchef finished lol... so yay for the weekend & here's to a weekend of taking it easy!!
Anyway since my last Favourite Things Friday/Loving Post was a little on the heavy topic side, I thought I'd go to the other extreme today and make it something completely random...
Today, my most favourite things are:
NZ Apples....
** Crunch, crunch, CRUNCH.... mmmmmmm..... YUMMY! **
Now no offence to Australia, because we do so love it here and there are obviously many many good things about living here... But unfortunately, the Aussie apples are NOT one of those many good things...
Nope, nope & more nope...
In my little ole humble opinion, Aussie apples are the equivalent to snow...
.... Soft, powdery and not very tasty to eat!
Ok that looks incredibly harsh when written... but that truly is how I feel. They shadow in comparison.
When we moved here I actually pined for NZ apples. Kind of all tasty NZ fruit really, since we moved from the prime fruit & produce growing area of NZ and were incredibly spoiled literally out of our back door step. But the apples most especially...
The crunch. The juiciness. The tastiness...
The just general all round GOODNESS!!
So I can not explain to you my sheer and utter joy when I went to my local IGA a few days ago and saw NZ Fuji apples are now available in WA. (Up until very very recently Australia would not import any apples from NZ - but the law has just changed. It took WA a while to catch up but it looks like we are finally there YAY!).
Oh my - I kid you not - sheer & utter 'joy, joy, joy, joy... down in my heart'!
Not so sheer & utter joy when I saw the $6.99 per kg price tag mind you, but in all honesty I would have paid the price of bananas (Currently sitting at $14.99 per kg due to the natural disasters in Queensland atm here) for them!
They have been SO worth it.
A little slice of home in a bite!
My second favourite thing this week is...
Avocado in a tube...
Not that I'm at all food motivated or anything.
Much.
The discovery of these wee tubes made my day! Again, often the avocados I find over here are pretty average. It's hit & miss whether they are all bruised & black inside, so quite often I don't buy them despite my love for them, because I just can't bear wasting things but will not eat a black avocado!
Yet usually Avocado flavoured things to give me my fix have about 0.00000000001 percent avocado in and about 999999.99 % additives and artificial gunk so it's just not worth buying those either...
But these tubes have 98% avocado, the rest of the 2% being lemon juice & a few seasonings. And they quite amazingly have no numbers in! Woo hoo!
... they have become a very welcome addition to my weekday staple gourmet lunch of marmite on toast.
What - that's not gourmet? - Well that's all this lazy chef can be bothered to rustle up during a busy week when we've just arrived home starving!!
So there you go... off the scale of the opposite of heavy this week hey - I can't believe I actually just wrote that many words about apples & tubes of avocado!!! LOL...
That is officially a new record of random for me!
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
Linking up today with the wonderful Shay's Favourite Things Friday & Kristy's Things I'm Loving...
Go join the party...

...A quintessential NZ classic!
{Not to be confused with the English version - that tastes comPLETEly different!!}
And if you feel like a giggle click on the link underneath the image above and watch the little video advert. I snorted out loud! You probably won't get it unless you are a kiwi or an aussie though... heh heh I'm still chuckling about it now!
xx

Hi Kat. I can understand your pining for your NZ apples. I am the same about bananas..we grew our own lovely 'lady fingers' and nothing else will do in the banana state of affairs for me. So Crunch away and enjoy.
Thanks so much for the info about the avo in a tube. I am sorcing that one for sure. Great FTF!
Apples are a very personnal experience. I love Washington State Red Delicious apples, but My Guy and Kiddo love the Pink Ladies.
Avacodo in the tube looks interesting. Dare I ask what is marmite?
That clip is soooooo funny..I could not stop laughing :)
I totally agree on the food front...I think all NZ food tastes way better than the food does here but that's just my opinion.
x
omg, avacodo in a tube?! We need that stuff in America, stat.
Oh I am so proud of my country and their awesome apples! Can't believe I haven't heard of avacado in a tube... must find!!!
Never had NZ apples .. another thing for the bucket list? along with the avocado in a tube.
A good apple is a great pleasure. a good favourite thing.
I'm a Pink Lady lover myself and seeing as I've never had a Kiwi/NZ apple I can't comment on how good they are. Glad you can buy some though.
Cheers
Helen
I did the happy dance when I saw the avocado in a tube. I must have it!
Enjoy your crunchy apples. Lots of stores here wont stock them ...I'm glad yours does.
Vegemite all the way baby!
I really only like golden delicious apples, but 95% of the stuff in the shops is horrible. My grandma has a tree that has really nice ones, but that's only a 2 week window for the year. I'm getting better at picking good ones in the shops by feel though, and I don't bother wasting my money if I'm not confident.
Having lived in NZ for a few years, many many years ago I can't say I remember what an NZ apple tasted like. My favorite these days is Pink Lady.
I've seen the Avocado in a Tube in the supermarket but didn't buy it because I thought it would be crap. I'm going to buy one tomorrow as I'm sick of either getting too hard ones or bruised and black. Thanks for testing it, yay.
Dare this Kiwi say it but I am more of a Vegemite girl... ;-)
We blobbed in front of the tv tonight, too.....The Last Indian....and I posted on Shay's topic. I'm in Perth, too. :)
It amazes me how many different kinds of apples there are! I would guess that at one of my local grocery stores, they carry at least a dozen different varieties! I used to be a red or golden delicious fan, but the last few years they always seem to have been sitting in storage toooo long & a bit mealy. I think Fuji or MacIntosh are my faves now.
I have never seen or even HEARD of avocados in a tube before! Sounds more like guacamole to me... LOL I mostly get home-grown avocados, either when someone brings them in to work or from the University's Farm Store (Cal Poly Pomona) which is just around the corner from me. Yum.
I haven't tasted Marmite. Is it anything like Vegemite? I did taste that - to me it was a bit like VERY salty, thick gravy stuff. An acquired taste I would think.
Enjoy your weekend of blobby relaxation!
Avocado in a tube, now that's interesting! :-)
I'm a Pink Lady lover as well and well I refuse to buy the bananas at the moment as I know first hand that lots of the banana farmers near us had no cyclone damage and they have still raised the price :-( Before we were buying local bananas for $2 a kilo and now they are $6....greedy, just greedy! Don't want to burst your bubble but vegemite is better for you as it has no sugar ;-)
