Progress...

After breaking my own rules on Thursday and starting a new project, I have been working away like a busy beaver on matching quilts for each of my girls...

Abbie's quilt blocks laid out
a trial layout in Abbie's cot size -the blocks aren't sewn together yet....

These 15 inch square unfinished blocks are quick to piece and oh so addictive!
{I suspect that they are so addictive because they are SO pretty and so quick to piece!}

So far I've made all 32 that are required for both quilts...

All 32 15 inch unfinished blocks

But have yet to sort out which will go in which quilt, sew the tops together & make the final decision of whether I want to include some lace in some of the blocks...

Playing with some lace...

Then of course there's the decision of how to quilt it!...
So far my options are:

a) quilt each block as I go & then just stitch them in the ditch to a back.
+ The pluses of this are that it's easier to quilt them & also the back will be super soft & cosy for the girls.
- The minuses are that quilting this way is monotonous and slow.

b) sew together the backs & free motion quilt them both.
+ Pluses for this is that it'll probably be faster for me to quilt, it will have a lovely crinkly texture
- but minuses are that the back won't feel as soft & smooth.

c) sew together the blocks & quilt in the "traditional" method & straight line quilt them or do a mixture of straight & free-motion.
+ Pluses are that this way will possibly be fastest
- Minuses for this are that the lines are all over the place so I might have a hard time keeping my lines straight across such a big area. I also struggle not to get puckers sometimes when I use this method.

The backs baffle me too...
I want to try and use what's in my stash because I've been pretty successful at doing that with this quilt so far.

So that includes these options:

Possible backing fabrics to combine

I'm toying with the idea of using bits of that vintage sheet in both of them because I had a Holly Hobby duvet cover all through my childhood which was very special to me (and my parents still have it so I plan to steal it back when I go back next ;) ). Therefore it will be quite sentimental to include some of that.

But I'm nervous because it is "vintage" and next to the new fabric it does look a little faded.

Any thoughts/suggestions on quilting or backing?
It will have to be a pieced back - probably using large strips, because I don't have enough of any of them on their own.

Ahhh the decisions the decisions!

But even with so much still to decide I'm so SOOOOOO in love with the progress so far on this quilt!!! Especially considering I started it on Thursday.

Such a breath of fresh air to make something frivolously pretty for my girls, just because :)

I think FMQ would be lovely, and after it's washed, the back won't be rough - as a touchy-feely person when it comes to textures, I'd love the feel of it, but that may just be me! I think you should go for the sheet too, it was the first thing that leapt out at me :o)

Vintage all the way. I have full confidence that it won't look faded but loved and lovely and just the way you want a favourite quilt to look. That's my opinion!

How pretty! I heart Children at Play!

I would go option B with FMQ myself. The crinkles would look great with the linear design of the quilt blocks.

Not sure about the back, myself...that's where I get stuck, too. But, I have made all three of my girls matching Christmas quilts, and I backed each with a different fabric so they can tell them apart since the front is identical. Maybe make each a little different so they can easily claim theirs:)

Okay...I seriously love these quilts! If you're not completely comfortable with using a lot of you vintage piece, how about using some of it for the label? That where there's still a little piece of you in these little gems, but not enough to make you feel unsure of your choice. As far as quilting...I rather stink at choosing how to quilt something, I have to pass on any suggestions. :o) But I have the utmost faith that you will figure it out perfectly!!

Hi Kat! Quilts for your girls will we most beautiful and girlish!
I think that vintage sheet is very good with the other fabrics for the back!
The old idea for quilts were to use recycled materials.
About the quilting...if you make it with traditional way quilting some lines but now too close to each other so that the back will be more comfortable?
Enjoy your weekend!

Utterly utterly girly. I love them !

I'd go with FM myself . Once they're washed they'll be crinkly and that will just add to the gorgeousness of them !

Brilliant job Kat.

Humm...first off, it's just beautiful! Have you chosen a, b or c yet? I'd go b or c, but mostly b/c I can't imagine a. You can't go wrong, though. This is filled with cuteness.
